We all know that family that begins decorating for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving, you might even be that family. It can be difficult not to go all out for the Holidays; but be cognizant of your neighbors, and how they might feel about your long-term display.
The very first rule you should follow, and everyone should follow, is when you should put your decorations up. The accepted standard is that the absolute earliest you should put decorations up is Black Friday, and they should all come down before mid-January; otherwise you’re that family.
The second rule, which shouldn’t have to be said, is be aware of the layout of your neighbor’s house. We don’t mean break in and draw a blueprint but be aware of where the bedrooms are; you don’t want a super bright light display to be inches from a bedroom window. Further, you don’t want to block their view with your 20 foot tall Santa inflatable. Another thing you can do to avoid a neighborhood showdown, is to put your lights on a time so that they are not blasting in the middle of the night – this is both courteous and energy efficient.
Finally, remember that if you do a great job people will want to view your work of art; this means traffic. If you’ve ever felt just a little bit of rage on the freeway during rush hour, imagine how a neighbor will feel when traffic hits their neighborhood – this might sound over the top, but if you’ve ever been to Candy Cane Lane you know it happens. Try to match whatever level the rest of the neighborhood is reaching with their decorations so everyone is on the same page.
