Free Family-Friendly Activities

In the city of Los Angeles, there are various spots where families can enjoy their time without spending a penny. Here at Chernov Team, we want our clients to have fun and the City of Angels is a great place full of family-friendly activities. This article will consist of three free, family-friendly activities in the City of Los Angeles.

Located halfway between the ocean and downtown, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has been devoted to collecting works of art that span both history and geography, mirroring Los Angeles’s rich cultural heritage and uniquely diverse population. LACMA is known as the largest art museum in the western United States, with over 135,000 objects that illuminate 6,000 years of art history from new and unexpected points of view. LACMA has created a tremendous free program known as LACMA NexGen membership. This program allows children in for free with an additional adult, free of charge. LACMA has plenty of art exhibits that appeal to kids and several tours of the museum. In addition, the tar pits are located right behind LACMA, where children can attend for free. LACMA has a family-friendly environment where families don’t have to spend a penny; many families should take advantage of this free interaction with art.

Known as “The Birthplace of Los Angeles” Olvera Street is a Mexican marketplace that recreates a romantic “Old Los Angeles” with numerous old structures and painted walls. Families can wander through the outdoor marketplace filled with stands selling Mexican artifacts. Olvera Street allows families to take a peak at what life was like back in the 1840’s by touring The Avila Adobe, the oldest house in Los Angeles. They can also check out the Firehouse Museum, which houses old-fashioned firefighting equipment. Visitors from around the world stroll around the marketplace smelling the ever-present taquitos and tacos at the outdoor cafes, listening to the strolling mariachi music, and watching Aztecs and Mexican folkloric dancers. Olvera Street is open throughout the entire week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you catch yourself making a quick visit to Olvera Street, make sure to stop by stand to enjoy a delicious churro and horchata with your family.

A day at the Griffith Observatory has no fee to it. Walking through exhibits, looking through telescopes, and gazing out from the terrace with a view of the entire city below are a few ways you and your family can spend the day here. In addition, there is an amazing hiking trail behind the observatory with breathtaking views. The observatory also includes free public star parties. Held monthly, kids get the chance to meet professional and amateur astronomers. The only cost at the observatory is if your family decides to visit the Planetarium, which is where 3 live shows are held. The shows are scheduled every 60-90 minutes daily, costing between $3 and $7. If you plan on making a day trip to the observatory with your family, avoiding the parking lot will be your best bet during the weekends. Instead, park near Ferndell and hike up toward the observatory, then hike back down when your visit is over. The Griffith Observatory is a great location for families to spend the day with no cost.

The city of Los Angeles is full of locations to visit, but not all are free. Next time your family decides to make a day trip, consider one of the few mentioned above and enjoy the no cost benefit.
