There are a lot of projects around the house that seem simple enough, why would you hire someone for something so simple; as simple as drilling a hole in a wall for
example. Assuming you know what you’re doing, you don’t need to read this article before you start drilling. If you aren’t in the know, give this article a quick read to avoid some possibly catastrophic results.
Houses have a lot of pipes and wires, and they are behind the wall (usually); that’s not something you want to drive a drill through.
Rule number 1, beware the light switches and sockets! If you don’t know, electrical wires are generally around those things. If you want to get really clever, you can figure out where your pipes are by looking down through the framing from the attic.
Rule number 2, use a stud finder. As a general rule, wiring usually runs up and down along the frames. If you can find the stud with the stud finder – your life just got a whole lot easier. To use the stud finder, just run it along a wall until the device signals – then mark the stud’s location with a pencil. Studs are generally spaced between 16 and 24 inches apart.
Rule 3, exercise caution with walls between the kitchen and bathroom; because there’s a really good chance that there is a pipe in that wall. While everyone is concerned that hitting a pipe will automatically create a catastrophe, the fact of the matter is there is a little resistance before you’ve gone too far.
Rule 4, know when to fold em. Sometimes it’s just better to spend a few dollars to avoid spending 10 times that. There is no shame in hiring an expert.
